Goodbye is Never Easy

Updated: Sep 27, 2021

Yesterday was a rough day. We had to say goodbye to our peppy, charcoal-colored toy poodle Java. She was an energetic therapy dog who enjoyed holding out her paw to people during our visits. When I would take her into nursing homes, she would repetitively place her paw on the patient's shoulder. She especially was attracted to those in wheelchairs. She felt more secure when I would hold her, but enjoyed the attention from others with a pat on the head and a shaking of her paw.

Oddly enough, it was exactly two years ago, on the same day that her best friend Oreo, also left us! I took this irony as a sign that Java's time was destined and God was watching over us.

Java was never the same after they were separated. Oreo was also a peppy poodle and therapy dog. She was a very kind Alpha dog, who snuggled on a regular basis with Java. They were buddies. After Oreo's passing, Java became somewhat lost without her. Consequently, I became the lead dog and Java became my constant shadow. If I was in the laundry room, Java came in the laundry room. If I went to the kitchen or bathroom, there she was always at my side, peering up at me with those adorable eyes.

The separation and adjustment for me will take time. Time has a way of healing our hurts. But, we still have our cat Simba to nuzzle. He gives warm hugs and his fur is so soft to stroke! As you can guess by the name he is a golden tabby cat. He loves to snuggle at night and perch above my head on the back of the couch.

My kudos to you today is to embrace every season of life. As we weep, we can find comfort in the happy memories that brought us laugher. There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die...a time to weep and a time to laugh. Ecclesiastes 3: 1-4 Embrace your season with peace and be thankful.
