His Voice is in the Thunder

Updated: Sep 16, 2022

I love thunderclouds and storms. These multi-level clouds extend high into the sky in towers or plumes. Having lived a long time in Oklahoma, the tornado capital of the world, I learned at an early age not to fear their frequency. High winds and thunderclouds are frequent during stormy tornado seasons. In fact, there have been winds recorded as high as 400 kilometers per hour. Yes, we as a family would take the necessary precautions in these severe weather conditions. But my parents did a good job I think, not to allow the circumstances of weather to be a gauge of fear. We had a healthy respect for the tornado sirens, but not panic.

Consequently, my perspective of storms has always been one of wonder and amazement. The sounds of rolling, pounding thunder and lightning bolts to me are a sign of God's majestic power. Thunder is created when lightning passes through the air. The lightning heats the air quickly. The temperature of the air in the lightning channel may reach as high as 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit, 5 times hotter than the surface of the sun!

On one of our evening walks, we captured a billowing thundercloud! Wow!! You could see the rain approaching to one side as the dark clouds began to roll-in. Our sunset picture would soon be covered in rain clouds. As we hurried to the car, I could feel light rain drops on my skin and then the glorious smell of rain. The deep rolling sounds of thunder began and I could see lightning at a distance. My soul was quieted with the majesty of it all. My world seemed so small in comparison to the power of the moment.

My kudos to you today is this. Next time you face a storm in you life, whether it's in the physical or emotional realm, remember that Creator God, the Almighty One is there to help you in the storm. He sends the rain to water the earth and it is a necessary part of nature. Focus on this: the God of the universe who listens to you when you pray and call to Him in your time of need, is the One whose voice is in the thunder!

You cried to me in trouble and I saved you; I answered you out of the thundercloud. Psalm 81:7
