God Smiles in the Little Things

Updated: Apr 3

Spring is a time of renewal and new life. It is a time to restart along with the earth that has laid dormant over the winter's blanket of colder weather. Here in South Carolina the trees are starting to pop open and the dead grey color of the forest is returning to green.

My attention was drawn toward these timid, little wildflowers. They seemed to be sprinkled among the pine needles. They were not boldly protruding, but delicately emerging from the damp forest ground. In our moments of renewal this is a good reminder to wait for seasons of growth. Our renewal starts out small, just as in nature, but with time the plants will be full with spring and eventually summer blossoms. I think this process is a reminder to us to not get discouraged with the small beginnings of life. The day to day accomplishments may seem humdrum, but as we continue to breathe in the "small" moments of simple joys, the bigger pictures will emerge.

I remember a time during my college days when my attention was drawn to an ugly trash dumpster behind our dorm building. It aggravated me to see how sloppily someone had thrown their trash items into the dumpster. I thought to myself "Why doesn't someone pick all that trash up?" As I was walking away, I heard a quiet voice say inside of me, "Why don't YOU go and pick it up?" Arguing with the Lord's voice and giving reasons like, "It's not my trash, why should I? But the feeling persisted and I turned around retrieving numerous items and throwing them into the dumpster until the area was all cleaned-up. I felt so much better!! No one saw me or probably cared, but knowing that I had done the right thing by cleaning-up a small patch of God's green earth really made my day.

My kudos to you today: Be faithful in the little things and in the places where no one sees the tasks that you are accomplishing. Continue to spread the beauty of your life's personality in the small places, even if you feel alone and insignificant. God is smiling upon your life as you share it with others. Look to be a blessing to someone today and it will come back to someone as a beautiful, little wildflower amongst the large forest of a busy day.

If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. Luke 16:10 NLT
