Detour Ahead

Updated: Oct 3, 2021

Starting a new month do you ever wonder about the challenges you might face? The odds are that many of us will experience detours of some kind. Numerous words can describe these challenges, like: road-block, bypass, temporary route, deviation, or back-road. Most likely all of these will take more time than we intended.

In the past several months, I have experienced multiple detours to planned events. The passing of my dad, getting Covid-19, my dog passing, and getting news of more skin cancer. We can call unexpected life events detours, but they are not intended to be the end to the means of our journey. Things will end like they "used to be," but still we keep on the journey.

Specifically, a detour can mean to deviate from a direct route or course of action. Detours take us in places we usually are not expecting and can be uncomfortable. How many like "uncomfortable?" I don't see many hands-raised. Haha.

When we hit multiple detours we might begin to get discouraged. Our daily life and routine become different than the usual routine. We desire a place of constancy in the middle of change. I wish I could tell you that my faith has held me through it all, but there have been times when my natural emotions over-ride the super-natural of my faith. It is in those low places that I cry and pray. Still I must say, that there has never been a time that the sun does not fail to shine again. God's mercy and grace is a faithful constant to any detours that life might bring to us.

Even when we think we've got all our ducks in a row and life is good, know that there might just be a detour a head. In faith, we can continue down the path with hope, praying and seeking answers for the next part of the journey. My kudos to you is to continue on your journey with hope because God does not disappoint! You never know what good thing might be just around the corner in the middle of your detour!

Hope never disappoints because God generously pours into our lives during times of suffering. But these produce perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us because God has poured out his love into our hearts. Romans 5:3-5
